Walking for health: National Walking Month

May is National Walking Month - a perfect time to lace up your shoes, get outside, and enjoy the simple but powerful act of walking.

At Shropdoc, we’re proud to support initiatives that promote better health and wellbeing for our communities. As an urgent care and out-of-hours GP service for Shropshire and Powys, we see every day how small lifestyle choices can make a big difference to long-term health - and walking is one of the most accessible ways to boost physical and mental wellbeing.

Why walking?

You don’t need special equipment, a gym membership, or perfect weather to go for a walk, and just a small amount of brisk walking each day can offer a wide range of benefits:

  • Walking regularly can lower blood pressure, support heart health and help manage weight.

  • Walking, especially in nature, helps clear the mind, reduce stress, and lift mood. It’s a natural way to fight anxiety and depression.

  • A short walk can give you an energy boost and sharpen concentration, making it a great midday reset.

  • Whether it’s a solo stroll or a walk with friends, neighbours, or pets, walking helps us feel more grounded in our surroundings and connected to those around us.

Walking and community wellbeing

This year’s Mental Health Awareness Week (12–18 May) focused on community, and National Walking Month fits perfectly into that theme. Walking can be a wonderful way to connect - with nature, with people, and with ourselves.

At Shropdoc, we believe that strong communities are built on everyday interactions: a wave across the street, a shared conversation on a walking trail, or simply being present and aware of the world around us. Walking encourages these moments.

Get moving…

  • Try a “walk and talk” - meet a friend or colleague for a walk instead of sitting down.

  • Make it a habit - add a short walk to your daily routine, such as before work, after dinner, or during your lunch break.

  • Explore your area - take a new route, visit a nearby park, or join a local walking group.

  • Walk for a cause - support a charity walk or community event and turn steps into social impact.

Whether you're taking a stroll down your street, heading to your local shop on foot instead of driving, or planning a countryside ramble, every step counts toward a healthier lifestyle.
