Supporting Health and Wellbeing Through Cycling

Thursday 6th August marks Cycle to Work Day, a chance to celebrate the many benefits of cycling and encourage more people to consider swapping four wheels for two, even if it is just for one journey.
At Shropdoc, looking after our people is just as important as looking after the communities we serve. That is why we are proud to support our colleagues through our Cycle to Work scheme, helping staff make healthier, more sustainable choices while enjoying the many benefits that cycling can bring.
The Benefits of Cycling
Cycling is a simple way to build more movement into everyday life, whether it is part of the daily commute, a weekend adventure, or a gentle ride to clear your head after a busy day. It is an activity that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities, and it does not have to mean racing up hills in professional cycling gear or taking on a 100 mile challenge. Sometimes, just getting outside and turning the pedals is enough.
There are many benefits to cycling, both physically and mentally. Regular cycling can help improve cardiovascular fitness, strengthen muscles, support joint health and contribute to maintaining a healthy weight. It is also a low impact form of exercise, making it a great option for people looking to stay active while being kinder to their joints.
The benefits go beyond physical health too. Cycling can provide valuable time away from screens and busy schedules, helping to reduce stress, improve mood and support mental wellbeing. Fresh air, movement and a change of scenery can be a great way to start the day feeling refreshed or unwind after work. There is also something very satisfying about arriving at your destination knowing you have powered yourself there (even if you did question your life choices halfway up that hill!).
Cycle to Work Scheme
For those travelling to work, cycling can be a great way to turn commuting into an opportunity for wellbeing. It can help avoid busy traffic, reduce the stress of finding a parking space and give you a little time to yourself before the working day begins. Plus, there is always a certain sense of achievement when you cycle past a long queue of cars while enjoying the journey.
The Shropdoc Cycle to Work scheme helps make cycling more accessible for colleagues by allowing them to spread the cost of a bike and cycling equipment through salary sacrifice. Whether our colleagues are regular riders, rediscovering a love of cycling, or dusting off a bike that has been patiently waiting in the shed for its comeback, the scheme can help make taking that first pedal a little easier.
The Shropdoc Challenge
To celebrate Cycle to Work Day, Shropdoc is also encouraging colleagues to get involved in our own cycling challenge. The challenge is a chance for staff to get moving, enjoy some fresh air and see how many miles they can clock up, whether that is cycling to work, enjoying a weekend ride or simply getting out on two wheels whenever they can.
The aim is not about being the fastest or cycling the furthest. It is about encouraging everyone to take part, have fun and enjoy the positive impact that even small amounts of movement can have on our health and wellbeing. Every mile counts, whether you are an experienced cyclist or just finding your cycling confidence again.
Cycling can also have wider benefits for the environment by reducing reliance on cars for shorter journeys and helping to support cleaner, greener communities. Every journey made by bike is a small step towards a more sustainable way of travelling.
By supporting cycling, Shropdoc is supporting the health, wellbeing and happiness of our colleagues. Whether it is a daily commute, a weekend ride or simply enjoying some fresh air and movement, getting back in the saddle can be a great way to look after ourselves.
If cycling to work sounds like something you would like to try, it is worth speaking to your employer to see whether they offer a Cycle to Work scheme or any alternative support to help colleagues get started. Many organisations provide options that can make buying a bike and cycling equipment more affordable.
So, whether you are already a regular rider or your bike has been quietly waiting in the shed for its comeback moment, why not dust off the helmet, check the tyres and see where two wheels can take you? And don’t worry, lycra is completely optional… although it may help you feel like you are in the Tour de France, even if you are only cycling to the local shop!
