National Allotment Week 2025

This year, National Allotments Week runs from 11th to 17th August 2025, and the theme is “Allotments and Wellbeing”, championed by the National Allotment Society.

Started in 2002, National Allotments Week is an annual initiative that helps raise awareness of allotments and their role in promoting healthier lifestyles, growing your own food, developing friendships, and bolstering communities.

Physical Health

Gardening combines gentle yet effective exercise - digging, planting and weeding - offering a natural workout that strengthens muscles, boosts stamina, and improves flexibility. Plus, being outdoors increases vitamin D intake.

Studies confirm that spending just a few hours in nature each week significantly enhances physical health.

Mental Health

Tending an allotment provides a calming environment. Research has shown that gardening can reduce stress, improve mood, and increase feelings of overall wellbeing. It provides a sense of accomplishment and can help individuals feel more connected to the natural world. Spending time in nature has also been shown to reduce feelings of fear and anxiety.

Nutrition

Allotments support the cultivation of fresh, healthy produce. This not only improves diet quality with nutrient-dense fruits and vegetables but also reduces food miles and grocery bills!

Social Wellbeing

Allotments act as green hubs fostering friendships, shared learning, and community spirit. This year’s theme emphasises an allotment’s role in strengthening community ties and overall social wellbeing.

Get involved

Visit a local site open during Allotments Week - many will host wellness sessions, quizzes, or tastings. Check whether your local allotment is one of them!
